My top 5 Summer reads...

Can't believe it's nearly the end of June already. We've been working hard all year and now it's time to relax in the sun. At least, that's what I'm doing. And there's nothing like getting a great book as an excuse to take some time out and get your imagination going.

So, if you find yourself on a break this Summer, grab one of these books and take it to the beach, the park, the backyard or the hammock and get reading.

I am Legend by Richard Matheson
This book is aaamazing. Miles better than the film. The book goes into so much more detail about the characters, the creatures and the hows and whys of the situation. I couldn't put it down, I read it in about three days.

And a side note... Richard Matheson passed away this past Sunday, he was 87 years old. Read the news story here. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/26/books/richard-matheson-writer-of-haunted-science-fiction-and-horror-dies-at-87.html?_r=0

Horns by Joe Hill
Cool, gory urban fantasy at its best. The first few pages on this book had me hooked. Plus, Joe Hill is the son of Stephen King so you know its gotta be good or at least deserves a shot. A big screen adaption is also currently in production starring Daniel Radcliffe. Hmm... we'll see.

Walt Disney Animation Studios, The Archive Series, Walt Disney's Nine Old Men: The Flipbooks
Each of these little flip books is by a different legendary Disney Animator from the good ol days. The nine old men are Les Clark, Eric Larson, Frank Thomas, John Lounsbery, Ward Kimball, Ollie Johnston, Mark Davis, Wolfgang Reitherman and Milt Kahl. Each book shows a complete animation of some of your favourite Disney characters. My favourite is Mickey and the magic broomstick from Fantasia, animated by Les Clark. All nine books fit into a nice, hard cover box. It's an awesome piece of Disney history to have if your an Animator, interested in animation or just love Disney.

Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton
I can't figure out if I like the book or the film better but if anything the book makes a great addition to the film because it's very well written and has all the extra detail and description that helps you understand the story better. Michael Crichton loves science and dinosaurs and from reading the book you can really tell that he is passionate about both topics. There are lots of scientific terms and conversations that get a bit over the top but all in all, this is another great read that I just couldn't put down.

An Idiot Abroad: The travel diaries of Karl Pilkington by Karl Pilkington
Hilarious! And if that isn't enough, you might learn something from Karl's blunt logic or maybe pick up a travel tip. This book is basically a print form of the TV show by the same name featuring Ricky Jervais which is just as hilarious. You can also download their podcasts which are great for long bus rides if you're not ashamed to laugh out loud and let out the occasional snort.
