Be a better employee... starting right now!

In the wake of recent VFX events such as studio closures, artist strikes and production tax subsidies there are things that you, as a VFX employee can do to better the situation.

  • Be thankful. Appreciate the fact you have a job. There are a lot of unemployed artists out there that would take your job in a heartbeat.
  • Be available. Turn up to work on time, be willing and available to help.
  • Think positive. There is no point stressing about the possibility that the studio you work at could go bankrupt and close. Don't spread negativity throughout your team. You'll lose friends and your own happiness, fast.
  • Be friendly. Say 'hi' to your team and supervisors. Take time to develop a relationship with your colleagues.
  • Work hard, take initiative. Hit your deadlines, communicate with supervisors. Take any opportunities to learn more. Take the time to learn outside of your area of expertise.
  • Be creative. Do something creative to make you fall in love with art again. Start a blog, read some books, do some personal projects.
  • Evaluate yourself. The industry is changing. Tax subsidies are the way of the 'right now' so take time to evaluate your career, family and personal life and make smart decisions.

I understand the stresses and frustrations that artists in visual effects are currently experiencing but it doesn't require giving up on the industry.

The worst thing you could do right now is bash the industry, whinge and complain and let your standard of work slip. Your reputation is important and you want to maintain your own positive reputation for the future.

Take time to think of why you got into visual effects to begin with. Take a look at the changes that you and the industry have gone through since then. Think of what your best qualities are and apply them while at work.

Being a better employee right now will benefit you for the future as you will have developed better, stronger relationships, achieved your own success and you will have a much more positive employee mentality.
